jai's thoughts on inglewood elementary school

The thoughts below were posted on a slightly different form on facebook.com/bmitd67 last night in response to an article in the Nashville Scene and another in The Tennessean. I haven't used our blog in a long time but I thought this was a good reason.

First, let me say that I do believe the educators inside of KIPP Nashville work hard to for the betterment of their students. Second, this is NOT an official Inglewood Elementary or IES PTO statement. This is the statement of the father of a thriving first grader at Inglewood Elementary School.

That being said...
It appears that Dr. Register has all but handed Inglewood Elementary School over to KIPP Nashville. It also appears that Dr. Register doesn't know his schools or possibly, doesn't care to be bothered by them.On the big day that Dr. Register was scheduled to come to Inglewood, about a month ago, he had a full schedule and he made it clear that Inglewood wasn't really a priority.

First, he was almost 30 min late for his meeting with PTO leadership and he brushed off his tardiness with a joke about not remembering where Inglewood was. He presented and listened but most of his responses were combative and dismissive. For example, the PTO expressed that despite our frustration at how difficult it was to get parental participation the PTO had more than doubled. His response: "That's not good enough."  When presented with stats about trends in growth and trends in attrition he squashed them because we weren't dealing with the kids struggling right now. He was presented with some contradictions to his facts and he ignored them.
Next he was scheduled to tour the school and visit classes. Instead, he rushed off to a ribbon cutting. He was about 30 min late for the faculty meeting in the afternoon, but he did cut that off so the community meeting would start on time.

In the Scene's article he said:
“.. I acknowledge that feedback from the meeting. That was faculty and community members, very few parents there."

There is plenty of video and photo to show that our library was packed, SRO, with a diverse group of individuals. Yes. we did have a lot of community members there and therein lies the rub. Dr. Register doesn't understand Inglewood or East Nashville. The fact that he couldn't recognize that this was an audience filled with caretakers of our kids who include Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents and Parents.

A factual point. We had a sign in sheet not everyone signed in and not all who signed in gave addresses (~100) but over half of those who signed in were residents of the Inglewood ES Zone(~50). Those of us who were there saw many of our fellow parents and grandparents but we are Inglewood and we all have a vested interest in the children in that school.

I guess because there were a few very vocal attendees who were not from Inglewood that was all he saw. Maybe because our families and communities members "handed his ass to him" as one administrator told another a few days after our meeting. I don't know but he obviously didn't understand who he was talking to. This past weekend some of us went canvassing around the school where we met several multigenerational Inglewood households, where we met people who have lived within a 1/2 mile of the school for 40 years. We met folks with dilapidated duplex stoops within two houses of a neatly manicured cottage to a set of those new "tall and skinnies". Dr. Register doesn't understand this about Inglewood, heck about East Nashville, but KIPP does. This sense of community is part of the reason why they are so interested in Inglewood, a school building that is 3 miles away, across Gallatin Rd. and in a separate MNPS cluster.

KIPP is ready to try a new model, a community school model. They have hired a bright, excited young principal from one of their more creative schools in Philadelphia, according to Randy Dowell, head of KIPP Nashville. Dr. Register and his team have given up on the community and the creativity of their principals unlike Randy, who fully believes in his mission and his team. I believe KIPP sees this as an opportunity to change the charter landscape b/c Inglewood isn't your typical high-poverty, high-minority population neighborhood where they typically situate their schools. Inglewood is diverse in a very East Nashville kind of way. Inglewood has a couple of streets of black folk and then a couple of streets of white folk next to a couple of streets where everybody lives together. The same goes with economics; some well off, next to some less well off but all within the relatively tight economic bracket. Inglewood is becoming younger and more hipster but streets and areas like Rock CIty, Bronte, and Glenmeade are still entrenched with the type of families (sometimes THE same families) who have been there since my parents moved onto Delmas in 1966.

KIPP wants something special but as the preliminary results of the PTO's "Future of Inglewood Elementry School" survey given to parents via folders are showing we don't want anything to do with KIPP. The Paideia path is more popular than charter (no offense East). A full half of the respondents want STEaM as our educational model with a pathway to Litton Middle and on to Stratford. The PTO will release the full report within the next few days.

So, even if KIPP understands the uniqueness of Inglewood better than Dr. Register they need to understand one particular idea - we want NO part of KIPP. If they come my children will go and they will not be alone. I will also say that some within this community are not opposed to organizing a walk-out come next August if KIPP comes in.
Have you ever seen a walkout by 5 and 6 year olds? I can guarantee it will be adorable.

Throw-up Television

Julia got sick tonight. Julia threw up what looked like more than she's eaten all day. I won't go into the very gory details but after I had showered and shampooed her she said:

"I wish it was on TV."
What do you mean, Julia?
"I wish throwup was on TV."
I quizzically looked at her and asked why.
She said with a grin, "so you can see it happen."

I decided it might be time to introduce her to Captain Underpants books.

Tara's comment: It was like a crime scene, as I climbed the stairs, heard the sounds in bathroom as Jai helped Julia. I nervously walked down the hall, so slowly, approaching our bedroom as that is where Julia had fallen asleep. It was unbelievable, so disgusting ... our bedding was white this week too AND we'd just changed the sheets. UGH! Ironically I had been about to go to bed, but it was another 1.5 hours before I got to sleep. I stripped the bed & washed comforter, then sheets. The sheets are not going to make it, maybe I can dye them. The room smelled so bad so we slept in the guest room - thank goodness we have it.

Portraiture for Kindergarteners

I don't know how I learned to draw people but I'm pretty sure it didn't go like this ...

  1. Draw the head and face
  2. Look at your body to see that the neck is attached to the head, draw accordingly
  3. Continue to the shoulders and you see that they are attached to the neck, draw accordingly
  4. Look to see that your arms are attached to your shoulders and draw
  5. Look at your own body all the way down with an end result of what you see below.

Tara's comment: the earrings are stickers ... also I thought this was supposed to be ME! : )

    She likes it?

Chubby brown boy sees Julia getting into the van after school and says to me,
    "She can read."
"I know" I said as he stopped walking and I stopped strapping Julia in to her booster.
"She read a whole book" he said with equal parts awe and confusion.
"She loves it, she does it all the time."
As he turned to walk away he said "She likes it."

I asked Julia who he was. She didn't know his name but knew he was in the 3rd grade

My little genius is making a name for herself.

    Black History Month in Kindergarten

"Rosa Parks did the right thing."

    "How, Julia?"
"Rosa Parks went to jail because she didn't give up her seat to a white man" Julia explained to me.
What does that mean? I asked.
Julia said: "I don't know? Don't give up your seat?"

Also, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (I was corrected to add the Dr.) saved Rosa Parks.

    "I love Martin Luther King!!!"

Melt My Heart and make me laugh

Jacqueline has been all about "I love you". Earlier today I was sitting on the sofa and Jacqueline came up to me and said "I wuv you daddy." and gave my knee an extremely audible kiss (she is all about kissing you where she can reach, not necessarily on your face). When we laid down for nap Jacqueline went through her family roll call but instead of "good night mommy", "good night Julia", "good night Johnders", and  "good night daddy." or "where's Julia?", etc. She said "I love you Julia", "I love you mommy", "I love you johnders", etc. It is absolutely the cutest, sweetest thing I have ever heard. I do not remember Julia doing this.

All that love stuff is but one example of the difference between these two girls. This afternoon I saw another example. I asked Julia to clean up her mess, a bunch of little pieces of paper. She, as usual, went on to do something else (writing a book) as Jacqueline walked past me with a handful of these pieces headed to the trashcan. I redirected her to recycle bin and she said "oh" and put it away. She walked back past me and grabbed another handful while Julia lay there oblivious, concentrating deeply on her book.

Just amazing how different these girls can be. Thank God b/c if I had two Julias I would die! She is the toughest relationship I have ever had.

Tara's note: It is really cute, so sweet, especially when I come home from work. As I walk in the back door, I hear "mommy home, mommy home!" & feet running at full force to greet me. Jacqueline hurls herself into my arms, hugs me tight & plants kisses all over my neck & face. It's hilarious. Julia NEVER did that as a small child at this age. Now she greets me with "what did you bring me? what treat do you have?" (I usually have something from my school, evil place full of snacks!!!). Then she remembers her manners (Jai has been coaching her) & says "how was your day?" while looking in my bag.

    Happy Birthday to Julia!!

Julia turns 5 today. It does go by quickly and if it weren't for this blog and photos it would be a blur. Julia is special in so many ways. She has grown so quickly and has become a wonderfully confident, fun loving, curious, and mind-bogglingly smart little girl. Regularly we have to remind ourselves that she is still a little girl.

I love you, Julia. I am proud of you and happy to be caught up in your whirlwind.

Too smart for my own good

Recent ramblings from Julia & Jacqueline:

    1. A couple of days ago I was watching TV. Jacqueline came in the living room babbling away like always. This time she went to the TV, which had captions on (as usual), holding one of Julia's sight word flash cards, she pointed at the subtitles with the card and said "this" and shook the card and said "that". She did it a couple times while I picked my jaw up off the floor and asked her to repeat, "What did you say? She must have done it about 4 times. "This, that." She's 22, almost 23, months old.

    2. Julia loves typing on the computer, especially with her Aunt Susie when we Skype. Yesterday she was trying to capitalize the first letter of a word, and somehow knew to hit "caps lock" but she didn't realize that it would capitalize all letters. Susie asked why her last couple of words were in all-caps while I explained internet protocol related to "yelling"/all-caps. I left the room and at some point later she was typing and it was again all capital letters. Tara commented and Julia's response was "They are all capital but I wasn't yelling". Tara was dumbfounded b/c she had not been privy to the earlier conversation. Once that was clarified we both marveled at how quickly Julia processed the concept and used it. She'll be 5 years old on Sunday. Amazing!

    It is the little things!

It is the little things that the kids do that make me smile.

It's when Jacqueline goes to the table to get her napkin while she's eating or when she turns her plate so that the food is closer to her.

It is when Julia goes to a book that has the word she's trying to spell in the title or when Julia puts her socks in her shoes and puts her shoes in the pantry next to each other when you realize that you're doing something right as a parent.

It is these little things that you can enjoy when no one else is around.

    Cute is as cute does

This morning I told Julia to put on her backpack so we could leave. Immediately Jacqueline pushed past me going away from the door. I followed asking where she was going but she gave me no response, walked right over to her little backpack, pulled it off the chair, went to the door and while trying to put it over her shoulder said backpack, or maybe bye bye; its hard to tell.

Cute is as cute does when Jacqueline tries to copy Julia.

    Like mother like daughter

We had a woman clean our house today and she did some straightening. We (Julia, Jacqueline and I) went to storytime. When we got back Julia made a beeline to her room when we got home and yelled down :
"Misty (not her real name),  "where are my cards?"
Misty said "They are in the drawer next to your bed. I needed to move them while I was cleaning."
Julia responded in kind of a mutter, "Oh, that's not where they go.  I don't put them there."
I commented that Julia has very flexible but particular places to put things. Sort of like her mother. Misty closed the conversation with "I noticed. I asked Tara if she wanted me to do any organizing and she said no, she'd take care of that."

Yes, I have am in the house with Tara, mini-Tara and minier-Tara (maybe).

    Wednesday quotes

    "Not something that concerns you."
    Excuse me? What?
Again excuse me - where did that come from?

Instead of staying at table while we finish eating dinner, Julia wanders around dining room table/area.
She picks up box of sight words, talking loudly ... of course! : ) (I guess, I didn't notice unusual volume)
"Dinosaur wonders about the sight words."
Jai: "Can s/he wonder quietly ..."

Looking at The East Nashvillian magazine, reads some ads, out loud of course:
"Five Points Pizza ... hot pizza, cold beer."

"For the love of God." - recent favorite heard from Miss Julia, common phrase of Mr. Jai's!

    "Guys, I get you."
This said in response to discussion about Julia not eating dinner & presenting options.

    4 going on 14 - unbelievable!
I had to walk away from dinner table to laugh in other room. : )

    quotes from Road Trip 2013

Nashville, TN to Greenville, North Carolina from June 30-July 6
Fun road trip with Jai, Tara, Julia, Jacqueline, Susie in the mini-van - woo hoo!!

Most of these are courtesy of Julia ... of course! : )

    7/2/13
    "I am a girlfriend; I don't know who's girlfriend I am, but I am a girlfriend ... my boyfriend likes jello."

Later that evening while the females were hanging out in room #2 of the lovely Days Inn
(Jai got a "Night In" alone in room #1)
We're watching a movie in the dark while I am nursing Jacqueline to sleep (not that it worked!).
"This is not a feeding place! This is a movie theater."

    7/3/13
Beach Day at Nags Head in Outer Banks (about 2 1/2 hours from Greenville)
As we're leaving the beach area, driving back to G'ville ...
"Bye beach, thanks for the waves!"

Marque we saw on the drive in anticipation of Independence Day tomorrow.
    "Happy Birthday America"
Julia says "Happy Birthday Barack Obama!"

7/7/13 after returning home to N'ville after Julia's early morning fall on Saturday at Asheville hotel
When asked to do some task, Julia's response: "I cannot. I'm wounded."

    Julia's Spanglish

Julia and I were counting in Spanish today and when she got to 20 she flipped to
venti-one, venti-two, venti-three, etc... With a little nudge every 10 we counted to fifty.

Fun with Julia, fun with numbers.

    "Daddy, it's Happy Wednesday."
"Why do you call it that Julia?"
"Well, last night Aunt Susie typed 'Happy Wednesday' when we were Skyping!"

    SB 2013 - Phoenix - Day 2

    "NO cable in PHX"

Friday morning, after not sleeping enough since both of our children decided to wake up at 6:00am (OMG!), Julia says she wants to watch TV. She announces to both Susie & I that she knows the channel for Sprout - "it's 1-5-0-5, but I don't know how to work the TV." I explain that Susie doesn't have cable. Surprised & with barely a pause, Julia says with a serious expression on her face "do you have PBS?" Susie & I cannot contain our hilarity and laugh A LOT. We also answer 'yes, she has PBS.'

    "You don't look 42. I hope I look that good when I'm 42."

Later that morning I went to a training school, Southwest Institute for Natural Aesthetics for a SWINA signature facial for some lovely relaxation. Three years ago when we last came to Phoenix, Susie took me to SWINA for an affordable spa experience; I haven't had a facial in about 6+ months. The student aesthetician made the comment above after reviewing my registration paperwork. I also got more compliments on how nice my skin looks. Ah, so sweet! Last week I went to Empire Beauty, my school in Nashville for some wax services, but I didn't have time for a facial before we left for Phoenix. I'd really like to get a massage next, but that might have to wait until May ... Mother's Day gift (hint, hint, Jai!!). : )

"Sir, are you here with a child?"

After naps, we ran some errands before heading downtown to the PHX public library in the afternoon. What a cool place! HUGE!! Unbelievable structure, incredible, amazing architecture.
It has 5 stories - FIVE you heard me. Really cool elevator banks with lights, a water feature, neon signs for everything, information booths everywhere - this was just on the FIRST floor! We spent most of the time in the children's section. The bathrooms had GIRLS & BOYS on door and low toilet, almost on the ground. There also was a children's garden with a poem written in the sidewalk as well as some stone steps/seats with flowers all around.

Before venturing outside to check out the garden area, 2 guards approached Jai & asked the question above. He also had been using his camera to take photos of the cool features. Ironically we had been discussing security at NPL, particularly in children's area. We didn't realize that he wasn't close enough to us to be considered with his family though there weren't lots of other brown people ... though I guess we look more Latino! : ) Jai quickly turned to us as we were walking towards him as they asked the question. We laughed of course later & joked that we should have said "I don't know that man. Children, stay away from that strange man!" However, it is reassuring that the child safety procedures are in place & enforced when something questionable happens. We suspect the camera taking & flash probably caught someone's attention.

There also was a neat area for young children under 2 years old. After feeding Jacqueline in a nice comfy chair, while Julia was with Susie & Jai at the computer doing something, we played there. As I sat nursing Jacqueline, I wondered about Arizona's NIP (public breastfeeding) law as I realized that in TN, I'm no longer protected since she's over 12 months. Of course I'd love for someone to say something to me, but I'm in another state, a not so friendly to human rights kind of state, so not feeling as confident as I usually do. Susie says she thinks it is 2 years which would really surprise me. While Jacqueline plays on the cushy floor, Julia picks out some DVDs (Caillou, Disney Princess sing-along, Handy Manny). Lots of books on the shelves under the benches, some magnet letters, other tactile type toys, cool area.

We headed home for leftovers (pizza from Thursday night), baths and early bed (hopefully).
    Another fun day in PHX!
