Happy Birthday to Julia!!

Julia turns 5 today. It does go by quickly and if it weren't for this blog and photos it would be a blur. Julia is special in so many ways. She has grown so quickly and has become a wonderfully confident, fun loving, curious, and mind-bogglingly smart little girl. Regularly we have to remind ourselves that she is still a little girl.

I love you, Julia. I am proud of you and happy to be caught up in your whirlwind.

Julia is 2!

Hard to believe, but she is!

She is amazing, quite the toddler, running everywhere, talking ALL the time, tons of fun.

Actually according to Jai's developmental emails he receives each month, Julia is now a pre-schooler. That seems too early - she's not old enough! However, she needs some kind of school experience & structure in a year or so, definitely by 4, especially when we have another child. She's such a big girl!

It was so fun to see her in the morning & wish her "Happy Birthday." Her face broke into a HUGE smile. I think she understands it - or at least enjoys the attention which is normal.

Her birthday celebration was our typical laid back, nothing fancy, style. I made her favorite (& easy) applesauce cake, also we had some homemade ice cream which she loves. This year it included Grandma Bonnie & Uncle Joel, but still only family. Maybe in year 4 which should be a Saturday we'll have a small party with 3-4 friends.

Presents: You know how much I love gifts for my birthday, but we've really scaled back for monetary & environmental reasons for birthdays & Christmas. Lots of people say we have to give her something ... they really think it's wrong that we don't do anything for Christmas! That's not our value anymore - we try to be careful consumers - so we decided to be thoughtful about how to recognize this event.
We discussed some possible birthday traditions & decided that Jai & Julia's would involve music. They went to Grimey's Record Store today.

We decided that we want to get her a new book for her personal library (we don't buy her books, she gets 1 monthly from Imagination Library, at least until she's 5), since we'll borrow books for her from the public library (once she's beyond destroying them!). The plan is for Julia & I to go to Fairytales Bookstore on Saturday & choose a book. I'm thinking another Eric Carle book - I saw one about a spider (she loves the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song) when we bought her big crayons there last weekend. Maybe another series book by the author of "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" - love that book! (we got "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" - she LOVES my mom's many cats!)

She got 2 books from her great-aunt, Billie. Jai called his Auntie Dear that morning so she could wish Julia "happy birthday" - it's so cute when she calls her "Auntie Dear." It's so cute when she calls other people by their name too. Adorable, so proper & adult!

Julia also got a great card, from Anne Marie, Kevin & Sam, related to Eric Carle's book "Very Hungry Caterpillar," about being 2. So sweet! Niki gave her an apron with a big "J" embroidered on it. Matches our kitchen apron set - nice! She also got a board book, Tinkerbell socks, cute card & $10 cash from her cousins in Chicago. Julia made out like a bandit in the gift department - just right for a 2 year old.

Jai hopefully will put birthday photos on flickr soon. I added them on 12-11-10 - cool date! Another cool date this year - 8-9-10! :-)

Julia is a wonderful child, we are blessed to have her in our lives!

What did you do on your birthday?

Julia had a pretty busy birthday (Dec 9th). The day started as most, food and a nap. After that nap I took Julia to the library to get her library card! Although, I don't expect to use it much for a couple of years, Julia is now an official Nashville Public Library patron.

Then came another milestone. We returned the rented breast pump (see blue box in photo). Tara pumped at work this entire semester as well as last May/June. She breastfed Julia (primary source of nutrition) for 1 full year! I am impressed by and proud of her.

Among some of the gifts Julia got for her birthday is this big ol' car seat. She was busting out of the old one, which is a surprise b/c she's still got a ways to go before she reaches the weight limit but she's long. Tara and I gave her safer passage as a birthday gift. She likes it b/c she is up higher and she isn't cramped.

There are more stories and pictures to come but I wanted to get at least one up.

"Wicked" is AWESOME!

I saw the musical last night with my friend, Niki!

It was the last official part of my birthday celebration.
I asked Jai for TWO tickets so I could invite a friend.

I didn't know how much the tickets are!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIKES!
It was so worth it.

Niki hadn't seen it and we had a GREAT time!
Thanks for being my guest and for being my friend, Niki! : )
Thanks for the COOL Hello Kitty gifts as a thank you. Love them!

Thanks, Jai! You are the best husband.
I'm glad Julia slept (eventually!) after we left for the theater.
Pick out a movie so you can be ready to leave when I get home on Thursday.
Get some sushi at Watanabe and see some sci-fi flick and get some popcorn! : )

"Julie & Julia" - the movie

My mom and I saw it last weekend - part of my birthday month celebration. Bonnie picked me up & drove to the theater, paid for my ticket AND let me have the points on my Regal Crown Club card. BONUS! : )

It is the best movie combination - Meryl Streep and food - and I got to see it with my mom! PERFECTION ... like all of the wonderful butter used in Julia Child's recipes. Stanley Tucci plays JC's husband. They are adorable together, just as in "A Devil Wears Prada". Made me want to see "Big Night" again - food & another great Stanley Tucci movie.

The next day I saw my mom & we talked more about the movie. I almost fell over when Bonnie said she wanted to see it again. For Bonnie to see a movie is one thing, much less see a movie TWICE. To SAY it - that is truly amazing!

Yet I agree - I want to see it again, it was funny and poignant.
Lots of yummy food displayed ...
Then there were scenes of Paris, France... oh, I want to live in Europe.

Jai jokes that I'm going to make every recipe in JC's cookbook. NOT going to happen! : ) I'll taste if someone else wants to attempt the incredible looking concoctions. I might dress up like JC as Julie Powell does in the movie! That was fun!

One of the scenes I found amusing was Julie's ignorance about blogs (insert Tara) and then fascination and eventual obsession with the blog following, i.e. comments from readers. I'm not quite like that though I find myself noticing the comments are mostly on Jai's posts. What's that about anyway?!?! : )

Most often I read and write my blog entries while I pump, either at home or work, since there are limits to what I can do while attached to a machine! : ) I find it especially helpful at work so that I don't fall into the trap of reading my work email or doing work stuff and getting stressed. I find it more relaxing to read/edit past blog entries or compose a post.

If you like food, France, Julia Child, Meryl Streep, movies or all of the above, I suspect you will enjoy this film.

Bon Appetit!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me!

I love my birthday. As a friend said, it is a National Holiday. TOTALLY!

This is also my first birthday as a mom AND the last year I can say "I'm in my 30's!" CRAZY!

I cannot believe I'll be 40 years old next year; more likely when we have another baby I'll be 40 or 41. Also CRAZY!

Gifts
Jai asked, but I didn't have any ideas ... too tired to be creative! I love gifts, but I've mellowed a bit in the past year. Spending time together is more valuable to me now than material gifts. I'm maturing. Also who needs more stuff?!

Then while writing in my Grateful journal one night, the pen died. AGAIN! Another one gone ... happens when you use them I realize, but somehow it surprises me each time. I search my office for a "nice" one and none seem appropriate. I tell Jai "couple of pens, like Jeanie's, they're not too expensive I think, $5-10."

Jai's funny ... "I googled 'Jeanie's pens' but didn't find anything." Jai emailed Jeanie.

Jeanie stopped at GMS the other day (I really miss my friends!) [she looks fabulous, retirement agrees with her!]. She brought my B-day present - 3 "old" pens she was about to toss (she knew I'd prefer she didn't if they still are good) and 4 "new" (in package). They are ALL nice, oh, so nice! Small things excite me now! : )

I got a cool t-shirt from Jai's aunt. It's 100% organic cotton with a neat star and "Happiness" on the front. Well done!

Jai got me 2 tickets to see "Wicked" on September 8. YEAH! I mentioned that idea to him.
I'll ask a friend since Jai is not a fan of musicals ... when we went to Chicago 2 years ago I went to see "Wicked" by myself.

Julia got me a "green" book of Suduko puzzles (recent interest, for YEARS Jai's been telling me I would like it), a cool box of stationary (cotton), and some pens. : )

Great gifts! I had a great birthday! THANKS!

I believe and relish celebrating my birthday ALL month ... I cannot change that tradition!

8/1 I planned to rest & relax & have lunch at Jerusalem restaurant (they have a great buffet I heard). However, Julia took a LONG nap during lunch time. Plan B was take-out from Dee's BBQ (yum-o) for dinner and Gigi's Cupcakes (double yum-o) and we watched 2 episodes of "Entourage." FUN!
8/8 I'm going to the POTATO consignment sale alone
8/15 not sure, maybe lunch with a friend ... at Jerusalem?!?!
8/22 see movie "Julie & Julia" with my mom (she LOVES Meryl Streep)
8/29 not sure, maybe walk with a friend

4 months and Basically Brillant

Today I am 4 months old. I weigh 11 pounds 5 ounces which makes mom very happy! My head grew another 1 cm and I am 1 1/4 inches longer since last month. Basically I am growing everywhere I'm supposed to.

My doctor likes my social smile which my parents think is normal and kind of flirtatious; lots of people notice how fun I am. I'm personable. You smile at me; I'll smile at you.

I am meeting lots of milestones for my age and actually impressed Dr. Robinson with my book handling skills... might be advanced. Not surprising given my parents... Wellesley and Sewanee... I've got brains! My dad described how I pay attention during story time and hold the book and really seem to want to turn the pages. My cloth book "Colors" is always with me in the car seat and I turn those pages... also, I like to put them in my mouth.

I sit with assistance in the Boppy and in the bouncy seat obviously.
I love to grab my feet and even put my toes in my mouth.
I've been on my tummy and rolled over to my back.

I go back to the doctor in 2 months. I should definitely be double my birth weight (13 pounds 2 ounces), probably more. I hope to demonstrate some new tricks. Maybe I'll be rolling over (from back to front), crawling some and sitting up more on my own.

3 Months & Counting!

Julia,

Happy 3rd Month B-day!

Your Mom and I decided to give you a couple of vaccinations for your birthday. We know you deserve more but that's all the monthly birthday fairy left for you.

You took it all in stride and are a princess among princess wanna-bes.

Love,
Mom & Dad (or whatever you decide to call us)

From Aunt Susie...

Hi. Happy '2 months' Birthday!!

How exciting for you (and your roommates!). I heard that Grandma Bonnie sang to you on 1/9. That would be a bad idea for me to try that with you because I want you to eventually speak to me...lol. Hope you like this thoughtful email message at midnight instead. Keep your eyes on that postcard I sent you on New Year's Eve. Pretty soon we will be able to catch up in person again. It may be only 3.5 weeks away. Also try to take it easy on the crying so everyone in your house stays healthy and rested (and you get prepared for your first visit to Phoenix)! I know you are going to love it here!! Enjoy "He's Just Not That Into You" on Tuesday. Stay smart and strong (and that other cute thing too)! Take care.

Much love, Susie :)
